These sustainable placemats are made from banana bark which is most often treated as agricultural waste and would otherwise end up in landfills. The fibers are handpicked, twisted into ropes and then woven into mats on traditional handlooms with a blend of cotton and jute.
From picking the banana fibers to weaving them into mats, the process involves several days of hand work by female artisans from Southern India, providing them and their families with a fair and sustaining income.
