Though we more frequently associate masala chai with India, coffee is the beverage of choice in the Southern sub-continent. Traditionally, South Indian filter coffee is served in a brass dawara set. In addition to brass being thought to have therapeutic properties, the thick walls of the tumbler contain heat and keep the coffee hot until the last sip.

Crafted in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, this dawara provides an authentic drinking experience -- the true Kumbakonam Degree Coffee, a blend of coffee prepared using undiluted pure milk and appreciated as the gold standard of South Indian coffee.

After brewing precisely ground coffee beans in a tiered filter, the coffee is poured back and forth between the dawara and the tumbler in huge, arc-like motions. This serves several purposes: mixing the ingredients (including sugar) thoroughly; cooling the hot coffee to a sipping temperature; and most importantly, aerating the mix without introducing extra water (such as with a steam wand used for frothing cappuccinos). An anecdote related to the distance between the pouring and receiving cup leads to another name for the drink, "Meter Coffee".
