These sustainable placemats are made from banana stems which are most often treated as agricultural waste and would otherwise end up in landfills. The stems are handpicked, twisted into ropes and then woven into mats on traditional handlooms with a blend of cotton and other natural fibers like river grass, jute, coconut leaf and bamboo. Looking for a matching table runner? You can find it here.
From picking the banana fibers to weaving them into mats, the process involves several days of hand work by female artisans from Southern India, providing them and their families with a fair and sustaining income.
