Who We Are
Greer Goodman, Founder and Owner of Abroad Modern
Greer has a sharp eye for the beautiful and functional. A graduate of Vassar College and the Pratt Institute of Design, Greers career has spanned several industries including film, museum education, and retail buying and visual merchandising.
During a trip to India, Greer was awed by the beauty of everyday wares in the labyrinthine markets. Inspired by her friend’s need to replace a broken rickshaw, Greer decided to start Abroad Modern, a socially responsible enterprise that sells handmade wares from around the world in order to support local economies and build sustainable income for artisans. (Her friend became her buyer in India.)
In 2019, she met Joy Kolin, founder of Giving Joy, which opened a pop-up just a few doors down from her own in Somerville, MA. The two partnered on several projects, and in 2020, they combined their businesses to become an even bigger destination for GOOD.
Joy Kolin, President & Executive Director of Giving Joy, Partner at Abroad Modern
When Joy was three years old, she took her first and most unforgettable trip: across the sea to visit her grandmother in Israel. After that, the wandering spirit stayed with her. As an adult, she looked for every opportunity to travel abroad.
Through various professional opportunities in international development, Joy has travelled to 63 countries, her goal always the same: to help people live a better life by contributing to sustaining peace, supporting democracy, and improving healthcare systems.
In 2018, she founded Giving Joy, a non-profit that provides micro-grants to women entrepreneurs worldwide. Abroad Modern is one of Giving Joy’s business partners. A percentage of all Abroad Modern sales fund the micro grants.
