Controlling a camel is no walk in the park. Unlike horses, the biology of a camel's mouth does not allow use of a bit. For hundreds of years, cameleers in India and beyond have inserted wooden pegs into the cartilage of a camel's nose to attach leads to these beasts of burden. In recent times, the practice has drawn much controversy. If were being completely honest, we prefer these pegs (all un-used!) as decorative objects or stands for rings than for their original intent, but we're not going to get in between a camel handler and his dromedary...

We got these curiosities from a tiny stall in a huge market in Jaipur, tipped off by Fiona Caufield's amazing Love India Guide Book series.
