These stunning placemats are created with all natural dyes using a Shibori (from the Japanese verb root "shiboru" – "to wring, squeeze or press") tie-dying technique, which originated in Japan possibly as early as 200 CE. While not nearly as old, the particular fabric for our placemats is sourced from a highly respected Shibori collective in southern India which received the prestigious UNESCO Seal of Excellence four times in recognition of its high standards of design and quality and earned a reputation as a leader in fair employment opportunities for women.
