This is special because...
Carving volcanic rock in to objects decorative, ritualistic and practical is the culmination of a long Mesoamerican tradition. Originating with the Olmec civilization of the Gulf Coast in the second millennium B.C., if not earlier. Upon marriage, the women in various Mesoamerican cultures received a molcajete (mortar and pestle) and a metate (another grinding tool, for dry goods like corn and grains)- carved from volcanic stone as part of their dowry, both handcrafted and ornamented with religious symbols and glyphs.
Today in Mexico, artisans continue to practice volcanic lava rock carving in the realms of both practical and fine art.
